There are many youth hostels in France, offering comfortable accommodation (usually in dormitories of 2 to 8 beds, with shared bathroom). Remember that they are usually single-sex establishments !

In some french towns, you could find "Foyers des Jeunes Travailleurs", which are hostels for young workers delivering private room for aproximatively 10€.
