Mount Saint Michael
is a jewel of architecture and one of the most impressive
sights of the World, situated in Normandy
Mount Saint Michael is an
ancient island were Aubert, the bishop of Avranches (a
city in Normandy) founded an oratory and a chapel after he had a Saint
Michael archangel vision. This chapel was replaced a few centuries
later by a Benedictine monastery.
Nowadays, Mount Saint
Michael is more an island because a causeway (La "digue
du Mont Saint Michel") leads to the Mount Saint
Michael and it is possible to reach the Mount Saint
Michael by car.
The Mount Saint Michael
must be visited by walk. It is renowned for :
- the narrow streets
plenty of medieval houses, "echoppes" (small
shops) and restaurants
- the monastery, the
abbey, the ramparts, the church and La Merveille du Mont Saint
Michel, a gothic structure
